Making sense of ‘slippages’: re-evaluating ethics for digital research with children and young people

In this paper, we argue that institutional ethical procedures do not properly prepare children’s geographers to conduct digital research with children and young people (CYP). To address this, propose a relational, dynamic approach ethics fit for such contemporary CYP. We find fault in growing disconnect between processual expectations of our academic institution the realities ‘ethics-in-practice’. This is especially pronounced an age where technologies have created fresh challenges researchers. As result, when ‘slippages’ occur – moments departing from but leading clear breaches researchers are left ill-equipped manage situations arise. reflect on own experiences researching youth work settings UK present two examples ‘slippages’, before offering reconstructive propositions geographies research.
